Most business Wi-Fi networks still rely on 2.4 GHz in 2010. It’s the default for many devices, and it “just works” for basic connectivity. But for organisations serious about performance, stability, and scale — 5 GHz is the future.
By now, most engineers recognise the limitations:

5 GHz Wi-Fi offers more usable channels, less interference, and higher data rates.
In an enterprise environment, these benefits directly improve stability, roaming, and overall performance — especially in high-density areas.
That’s common — in 2010, many devices ship with 2.4 GHz radios only. But dual-band clients are gaining ground, and newer laptops, tablets, and smartphones increasingly support 5 GHz.
The infrastructure should lead. If you wait until all clients are dual-band, you’ll fall behind. Deploy 5 GHz-capable APs now and encourage gradual migration.
Some controller-based systems offer band steering — nudging dual-band clients to use 5 GHz when both bands are available. This works well when implemented carefully.
Avoid overly aggressive settings. Monitor the effects. If clients experience delays or connection failures, fine-tune or disable temporarily. The goal is gradual steering, not disruption.
Unlike 2.4 GHz, the 5 GHz band includes many channels — but not all are equal.
A good design accounts for client support, avoids DFS where needed, and ensures consistent performance across bands.
2.4 GHz may be the default — but 5 GHz is the upgrade. Enterprise networks that embrace it now gain the benefits of cleaner air, more bandwidth, and future-ready performance.
Don't wait for the clients to demand it. Build for the next five years, not the last five.
